How to Be Saved
One of the most important decisions we will ever make in our life is “What we will do with Jesus”? Why? Because there is no other name under heaven that can eternally save you (Acts 4:10-12). Many people think that being good is enough to obtain salvation and eternal life but the Bible clearly states that there is none righteous (Romans 3:10), that all have sinned (Romans 3:23), and that the wages of sin is eternal death (Romans 6:23). If the story ended here it would be truly tragic, but God through his mercy made an escape for humanity!!
Approximately 6000 years ago God created Adam, and after he saw that it was not good for man to be alone he created Eve to be his companion. When Adam was created he was given dominion over all of God’s creation, however when the devil came on the scene he talked Eve and Adam into rebelling against God’s commandments. For their punishment God kicked them out of the Garden of Eden, and the keys to the earth were handed over to Lucifer. This fall from God’s grace put humanity on a disastrous road to eternal damnation because of their sin. Since the fall mankind has done whatever they’ve wanted to because they have no relationship with God and thus they have no true or reliable moral compass. However, no matter what people do to feel better about themselves there still remains a deep discontent inside of them because the hole they trying to fill with alcohol, drugs, money, sex, and things never seem to make them happy for very long, but why? Because that hole can only be truly filled with a relationship with their Creator. So what did God do to bring us back into a relationship with himself? He sent his son Jesus Christ to pay for our sin!!
The first thing we need to do is understand what the Bible says about our sinful nature. As we said earlier the Bible says that “all have sinned”, which means we can never be good enough to get into heaven on our own. However, God made an out for mankind because he allowed man to conduct blood sacrifices to cleanse their sin. If we take a closer look at Adam and Eve we see that the first thing God did was shed blood because He made them clothes out of animal skins (Genesis 3:21). Even though they had clothed themselves in leaves to hide themselves, it took blood to truly cover them. Next, if you read through the Old Testament you will see God has always required a blood sacrifice for sin, but even though he set up the different offerings for various sins the sinfulness of man always caused man to sin over and over again. Finally, God began to speak through his prophets that a sacrifice was coming that would take away (forever) the sin of man (1 John 2:2), and the price of sin was paid once and for all by Jesus when he died on the cross. 1 Corinthians 5:18-19 tells us that “…all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation”. In understandable English, Jesus paid for our sins ONCE AND FOR ALL so that we could be brought back into fellowship with God, and this is why this is the GOOD NEWS… Jesus came to restore man to his position before the fall, which means we can once again have intimate fellowship with God the Father!! So what you do to be saved??
Repentance, Confession & Faith!
When Jesus died on the cross his last words were “It is Finished” (John 19:30). Many may think he said this because his suffering was over, but what he was saying was that his reason for being here was done, and all the sin of everyone to ever be born was now PAID IN FULL!! However, his payment means nothing if the person he paid it for does not accept it. I could have a million dollars in my hand, but until you reach out for it you will never have it. Just knowing our need for a Savior will never save us and neither will trying to be good because our own righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). To be born again we all must first repent, because without repentance a person will never be born again (Luke 24:47). Repentance isn’t crying and wailing, but Biblical repentance means to “change your mind and do a 180”. In other words “you turn away from your sin and doing your own thing” and “turn to Christ and do what he tells you to do”.
The second step is that we must confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9). This is important because Jesus said if you confess me before men then I will confess you before my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 10:32). There is no “easy believer-ism” when it comes to following Christ and this is why he demands we confess him openly. Jesus said if the world hates me they will hate you (John 15:18). When you think about it, once a man publically confesses that Jesus is his Lord it makes them answerable for their actions.
Finally, you must believe with your heart (not your head) that God raised Jesus from the dead. In all other religions their “god” is dead, however Jesus Christ not only died for our sins but he was resurrected after three days. This is so important because if you cannot believe that Jesus was raised from the dead, how then can you believe Jesus died for your sins? The true power of our Faith is that Jesus was able to defeat death, and that once we make him our Lord and Savior he will do the same for us. In addition, the resurrection of Jesus shows us the power that God has so and this power will help us overcome everything in this life including sin. While many people only talk of God’s grace and forgiveness if we sin, Jesus said he came to set us FREE from sin (John 8:34-36) and this is done by his resurrection power!! So once we have repented, confessed him, and have faith in our heart then according to the Word you are now saved and a new creation in Christ (2 Cor.5:17). And if the devil says anything to you about not being save then say this “For if (I) confess with (my) mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in (my) heart that God raised him from the dead, (I) will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved” (Romans 10:9-11).
So what is the four step process to salvation?
1) Realize that you are a sinner, and there is NOTHING you can ever do to make yourself right with God. You cannot work hard enough or live good enough to every get into God’s kingdom.
2) You must repent… Repentance is not just being sorry but making a 180 turn from following sin and you own selfish ways to following the one true God and his son Jesus. Acts 3:19 says “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out”.
3) You must confess Jesus is the one true Lord of all. This means that you have replaced yourself as the lord of your life and have made Jesus your Lord. For it says “with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:10). In other words, you cannot be a secret agent Christian, and if you deny him then He will deny you.
4) You must believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, for this is where the real power of salvation lies. Once you get here the real walk begins…
At this stage many people will have you say some formatted “sinners prayer”, but I do not have one or use one. If God has convicted your heart, then what you need to is pray that which is in your mind and heart right now. We are never promised tomorrow so I pray if you do not know Jesus that you make a decision today to turn around and follow him, and once you do he will fill you will real Joy, Peace, and Love. So what next? Well if you prayed to receive Jesus then here are some simple steps that will get you started…
